BrushStrokes By Mary Anne is a Proud Retailer of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint & Supplies
Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint is an ancient all-natural paint containing basic ingredients including milk protein (casein), limestone, clay and natural pigments. It dates back over hundreds of years and has even been discovered in cave paintings and Egyptian tombs. When absorbed into the surface, Milk Paint will never chip or peel.
It is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, it provides a completely breathable coating and is ideal for painting wood, plaster, drywall and a variety of other surfaces. It provides a beautiful matte finish that shows amazing variances in the color. It is available in 12 beautiful finishes that can be easily mixed to achieve many custom colors.
By adding the Milk Paint Bonding Agent you can use Milk Paint on even more surfaces such as previously painted walls, varnished surfaces, ceramic tiles, metal, glass etc. Without the bonding agent, Milk Paint will resist some pre-finished or pre-painted surfaces to achieve an authentic “chippy” look. Creating Miss Mustard Seed’s authentic “Chippy Look” (antique, distressed or aged) is fun and as Miss Mustard Seed says, it will “chip or distress” unpredictably so you just “have to go with it!” Depending on the condition and age of the furniture piece, it’s is like “instant distressing!”
If you don’t want the “Chippy Look” – Simply combine Milk Paint with the Bonding Agent will avoid the “chipping” and you can create solid color finishes beautifully that can be stained, layered, waxed and combined with other decorative painting techniques for a truly unique and one of a kind look.
Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint can be easily applied to Furniture including Painted Finishes, Metal, Glass or other Slick Surfaces
It is a wonderful paint for raw/new or unfinished wood furniture or wood projects. It penetrates the wood like a stain, but looks like a paint. Since it penetrates the wood, it is breathable, it won’t chip off and it’s super durable. (It can adhere to previously painted, varnished or non-porous surfaces as noted below.*)
Most surfaces do not need to be stripped or primed – but some projects may require light sanding depending on the finished look you desire. Milk Paint used alone, will resist some (not all) existing finishes (pre-printed or pre-varnished) in some places and will naturally self-distress randomly, creating it’s distinctive “chippy” antique or aged look.
*If you want the paint to grip to non-porous surfaces, then you have to add the Milk Paint Bonding Agent as noted above. By adding the Bonding Agent to the first coat of paint. it will make the paint adhere to existing finishes, other types of painted or varnished surfaces including furniture, walls, metal, glass, ceramic, tile, and other slick surfaces for a smooth finish. It does help to rough up the surface with sandpaper a bit prior to painting, but it’s not necessary. The bonding agent is added to the paint, so it does not require a separate application. As far as preparation goes the process is simple, clean the piece that you plan to paint, no need to sand or scuff before applying paint.
