Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint - Combination French Enamel & Lucketts Green

Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint – Combination French Enamel & Lucketts Green

Early settlers brought this method of paint making to North America more then 250 years ago. Basic ingredients included milk, limestone, clay and natural pigments like coal, berries, roots, seeds and minerals all found close at hand. This resulted in a durable paint evident today by antiques showing the original milk painted finish.

To properly protect your Milk Paint, it should be sealed with our hemp oil, beeswax, or varnish. Simply mix with water to create a creamy consistency–it’s that easy!

(Milk Paint’s colors tend to have a lot of variation depending on how they are mixed and applied.)

Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint

Instructions for Mixing

Mix 1 ½ parts warm water to 1 part milk paint powder (or 1 ¼ to 1 ratio with lighter colors.)  Paint may be mixed in a blender (used strictly for paint) or in a container with a stir stick.  If using a blender, pour water in first and then add the powder.  For hand mixing, measure the powder first and then add water.  Mix for 3-5 minutes until water is absorbed into the powder and the mixture is relatively smooth.  Water to powder ratio may be adjusted to achieve desired consistency.  Only mix the amount needed for the project.  Excess can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days.  Stir before use.  If the full quart is needed, mix 2 ½ cups of water with entire bag of milk paint powder.

With a quality brush, apply 1-2 coats of milk paint, stirring occasionally.  Allow 30-60 minutes between coats.  Finish with Miss Mustard Seed’s Furniture Wax or Hemp Oil Wood Finish.

Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint Bonding Agent

This new 100% natural product, when added to Milk Paint allows milk paint to be used on non-porous surfaces. Milk paint can now be used for many different surfaces such as painted walls, latex paint, oil paint, varnish, glass, metal etc. Contains no VOCs. Trying to decide how much Milk Paint Bond you need? Depending on the application this will vary. For furniture, ceramic, varnished surfaces you can use as much as 1 part Milk Paint Bond to 1 part already mixed Milk Paint, or as little as 3 parts Milk Paint Bond to 1 part already mixed Milk Paint. If you are using the Milk Paint Bond for painting walls, you need approximately 1 part Milk Paint Bond to 5 parts already mixed Milk Paint. We always recommend doing a test patch to test the adherence, if you are having difficulty, add more milk paint bond. You can add up to 1 part Milk Paint Bond to 1 part already mixed Milk Paint. (250 ml)

How to use this product:

  • Shake well before using.  For optimum adhesion, clean the surface to be painted with T.S.P. and sand lightly to roughen the surface.  Always test adhesion before applying to a large area.
  • To use with Milk Paint:  For the first coat, mix one part of bonding agent to two parts of milk paint already mixed.  For an even strong grip, mix in equal parts.  There is no need to add bonding agent to the second coat of Milk Paint.
  • To use as a primer for water-based paints: Apply a thin layer of bonding agent with a paint brush or roller.  Let dry for 2 hours before applying paint.
  • This product contains no solvents of VOC and is almost odorless.  Clean brushes and tools with warm, soapy water.  Protect from freezing.

Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint Hemp Oil Wood Finish

This solvent-free oil finish provides a protective, water resistant surface. Use on new wood that is bare, stained, milk-painted or to revive old wood finishes. It penetrates to protect from the inside out and does not leave a surface film that will chip or scratch. This food-safe oil finish is perfect for use in the kitchen on wood or stone. Used outside, it can restore the luster of old oil based paint or revitalize surfaces such as cast iron. (8 oz)

How to use this product:

  • Surface must be clean and dry.
  • Apply small amount of oil to surface using a clean cloth.
  • Rub gently until it is absorbed into raw wood or Milk Paint finish.
  • For additional sheen and protection, add 2-4 coats.
  • With no solvents, drying time is extended, so allow 2 hours between coats and wipe away excess after 12 hours.
  • Finished piece may take several days to cure.  To maintain, apply a light coat every other year as needed.
  • To remove scratches, lightly sand blemish, then reapply oil.
